What counts as an after-hours lockout?
Any lockout outside normal working hours: returning late from a night out, an early-morning shift, or a weekend away when the spare key is in the house. The business lists its hours as Monday through Sunday, all day.
Step 1: the phone call
Tell the dispatcher where you are, what kind of lock or vehicle it is and whether anyone is in danger. You’ll get an approximate estimate and an expected arrival time.
Step 2: checking the situation
When the locksmith arrives, they look at the lock and door or vehicle, confirm the price and check your ID. If your ID is inside, they may accept other proof, such as a neighbor confirming who you are, once you’re in.
Step 3: non-destructive entry
Most standard locks can be opened without damage using picks, bypass tools or vehicle-opening kits. Drilling is a last resort and should be explained before it happens.
Step 4: rekey or repair if needed
If keys were lost or stolen, consider rekeying while the locksmith is there. It saves a second visit and service fee.
Staying safe while you wait
- Wait in a well-lit spot or a nearby business that’s open
- Keep your phone charged and share your location with someone you trust
- Don’t try to force windows or doors
